Be Kind. Do Good. Show Love.

“Being a Nurse Assistant is not an easy job, but it is extremely rewarding,” says Steven Beck, a certified nurse assistant at Garden Spot Village. “If you have a big heart and a desire to make people smile, this is definitely a job you should consider,” he adds.

With a ready smile and a servant’s heart, Steven embodies Garden Spot Communities’ Guiding Principle. It’s easy for him to “Be Kind. Do Good. Show Love.”

Steven started working in the skilled nursing households at Garden Spot Village in June 2021. He was drawn to the role because it was close to his home and he had several good friends who already worked at Garden Spot. They recommended the community as a good place to work.

Although Steven enjoyed his role as a personal care assistant in a residential community for adults with mental disabilities, he needed a change.

Thankfully, the change included paid training.

Garden Spot paid for his certified nurse assistant training. He completed the three-week course at Maple Farm, a long-term care community in Akron, Pa., owned by Garden Spot Communities. In a unique partnership with Harrisburg Area Community College, Garden Spot employs a certified nurse assistant trainer and evaluator, who teaches classes at Maple Farm regularly.

Steven completed his written and clinical tests and began as a full-fledged nurse assistant. In his role, Steven connects deeply with residents. “I talk with the residents I serve from the minute I walk into their rooms,” he says. “If they do not want to talk, I respect that. Most residents, though, appreciate the conversation. I try to stay engaged with them the whole time I am helping them.” He pays attention to the details of their lives and is happy to discuss whatever is important to the individual.

No two days are the same, Steven says. While the basics of the day—helping residents dress, eat and bathe as well as taking vitals like blood pressure, pulse and temperatures—remain the same, the activities and guests change from day to day.

He enjoys the variety.

Steven also values Garden Spot’s faith-based mission. He appreciates the opportunity he has to hear the testimonies from the residents he serves as well as encouragement from Garden Spot’s leadership to live out his faith at work.
